Maybe the G in AGI stands for Gemini

My favorites.

New Gemini model out today: 3.1 Flash-Lite, superfast and very capable.

The Gemini models remain my favorites: for their speed, price, and versatility, especially in visual tasks. Keep in mind that I am weaving these models programmatically into other systems, rather than yapping with them — although I think Gemini is a fine yapper, too.

As Anthropic and OpenAI lean HARD into the coding agent thing — tuning their models heavily for the task — Google continues to expand and refine a flexible … dare I say general … intelligence.

P.S. Although, let me add, the quick deprecation of Gemini 3 Pro is annoying and irresponsible. This isn’t just a Google thing — although this model had a notably mayfly existence — and there is really no telling if or when any model you depend on will be yanked away. Even if the replacement is “better” according to many benchmarks, it might also contain unpredictable regressions along subtle dimensions. (You can browse the responses to Google’s deprecation announcement for examples.)

This issue is totally resolved with a self-hosted model, of course, but there aren’t yet any self-hosted models with Gemini’s visual acuity. I do expect that to change before too long!

Gemini is also my favourite. It’s very smart and has a backbone. I don’t think the Gemini 3 Pro complaint is very fair as it was listed as ‘preview’. Although I should note Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite is 2.5x the cost of the previous version and I’m quite annoyed by that.

Y'all. Every year for attendance in one of my classes I just pass around a sheet of paper, first and last name on the left, school id code (which does incorporate initials of names) on the right, with space in between.

I'm thinking there's no way an AI can get it right. 50 IT students (like people who don't write on a regular basis) different handwriting, and it's not lined paper and the names and ID are NOT aligned.

Tried Copilot, not even close or usable.

Gemini gave me a perfect spreadsheet/csv. I'm not sure if this is impressive to others or whatnot, but that one blew me away.

I do appreciate how Gemini seems to be consistently getting better at delivering assistance and information on a broad range of topics beyond code. You are touching onto a topic that holds a lot of weight for the future, which is what do we really mean by General. Does it do everything? Does it communicate with everyone? How will the world really look and notice once AGI exists? If it does will we still only strive to monetize it?
