  • I would be a bit sad if most mega projects (space stations, battle ships, international probes, dams, etc) do not have some kind of honorary tribute to the many people who came together to make it happen. A little plaque costs nothing but would be meaningful.

For many years now, NASA has let random people get their name printed on the Mars missions on a little plaque. Perseverance has 11 million names bolted onto the frame. My buddy boasts that he has been on Mars N times.

  • There was a MythBusters episode about this. The team had a pretty tough time making a working craft out of it.

  • Instead of a naive dense matrix, you can use some implementation that allows sparsity. If element does not exist, gets a non-zero value which can still be sampled. Which theoretically enables all outputs.

  • I have never seen someone fired over hiring a dud. Reasonable people know that hiring has smoke and mirrors - everyone is putting on their best fake persona to get in the door. Maybe in some toxic, cut-throat environments, but this seems very particular.

Firing the best person because they outshine the master is plausible. One of the 48 Laws of Power.

  • Agreed, really need a tl;dr here, because Parquet is boring technology. Going to require quite the sales pitch to move. At minimum, I assume it will be years before I could expect native integration in pandas/polars/etc which would make it low effort enough to consider.

Parquet is ..fine, I guess. It is good enough. Why invoke churn? Sell me on the vision.
