I don't know, if you look at public health consumption expenditures per capita, current prices, current PPPs, 2015-2024, US is up there. It's mostly medicaid and medicare. You might not like how the money is being spent but the idea that US doesn't spend money on these things compared to other Western countries is just not true.

I get that it's cool to say US doesn't spend on these kinds of things, but it's just not true. It's a rich country

But seriously, I think the level of discourse has gone down considerably on HN in the last few years. I know people always say this in their forum but I think it's true.

For instance, you'll see a post about GPT. Top comments are often "I use Claude", completely irrelevant. And then when [political thing happens] you get these passive-aggressive submissions with a lot of upvotes "how to switch to Claude". It's all just so exhausting. Constantly this moral grand-standing. Here is an example:

The person quotes his or her qualifications as being single for 20 years, as though that's a qualification. It was 100% about long term coping mechanisms for persistent loneliness and drifting in life. Why would you want to model that?

Thats not what most people use about the wrong person. Thats an abusive relationship. And the comment says as much a few sentences later
