Many people make their livings from these platforms. They cant leave without abandoning most of their income stream.

Why was all that software not open source already?

Google had been working on a big LLM but they wanted to resolve all the safety concerns before releasing it. It was only when OpenAI went "YOLO! Check this out!" that Google then internally said, "Damn the safety concerns, full speed ahead!" and now we find ourselves in this breakneck race in which all safety concerns have been sidelined.

If Israel can build an electrical grid connection to Greece then Ireland should have no problem building good connections with France and the UK.

It's worth it as another layer of security. The beam width being so narrow means even intercepting it becomes harder. This is more relevant for down-to-earth links where the spot hitting the earth is so narrow it could be confined withing a geographically controlled area, rather than hitting an entire continent like longer wavelengths do.
