I think most homelabbers default to Caddy and/or Traefik these days. Nginx is still around with projects like NPM (the other NPM), but Caddy and Traefik are far more capable.
DevOpsToolbox did a great video on many of the reasons why Caddy is so great (including performance) [0]. I think the only downside with Caddy right now is still how plugins work. Beyond that, however it's either Caddy or Traefik depending on my use case. Traefik is so easy to plug in and forget about and Caddy just has a ton of flexibility and ease of setup for quick solutions.
My point was irrespective of your position: it doesn't matter. The mainstream won't break the Apple/Google cycle the same way the mainstream didn't break the lock carriers once had on software updates for phones. Apple broke that through its small but influential technologists and prosumers. Motorola can potentially be that for breaking out of the locks Apple and Google have bound through hardware manufacturers. The only reason AOSP can't exist without Google has nothing to do with Google, but more with Qualcomm. Motorola has the opportunity to broker that breakout. And we need this right now. Lawmakers and big tech are locking themselves in further, the longer we don't have another option the harder it will be to move outside of these greedy corporations.
That's my point. Google has commitment to support for the same timeframe. Google has zero track record of reducing support as Pixels have continued to be rolled out. This is the one area Google has been consistent in a positive direction.
Beyond that, there's no guarantee Apple continues to support for 7 years. They are literally the same level of corporate greed as Google.
Also... Apple has locked all of their users into planned obsolescence for a decade plus. At least their is hope on the slightly more open side with AOSP.
Apple is a poster child of nothing. They have put out hardware that is inaccessible and unrepairable for years. Both companies suck to their end users, let's not pretend Apple is some utopia of awesome to their customers.
